The RWAS Forestry Committee and its various sub Committees are extremely pleased to be staging a full programme of competitive activity and tradestands within their section of the Show this year.
Exciting live competitions will take place of the Pole Climbing and Wood Chopping in the large action ring. Bodgers will offer three days of demonstrations on old crafts in the small action ring and the YFC will compete in the ring on the Thursday. The Stickmaking section will have a great display of beautiful handcrafted products and the schools photographic competition winners will be presented with their certificates by Nigel Owens, WRU referee on the Thursday.
The Committee organises two other competitions “out of Show” Treefelling and the Woodlands competition which attracted an unprecedented number of entries in 2017. Winners of the Woodlands completion will also be presented with their awards and offered recognition for their efforts at the Show.
The Society and Committee are particularly pleased that new poles have also been put in place for the event which should generate some exciting speeds of competition. We are also extremely honoured to be able to host a talented one armed wood chopping competitor from New Zealand who has overcome disability to compete at this level.
There is also a great picnic area for families where you can enjoy the live music being played in the bandstand and watch the show on the big screen and Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin will have a base for children under 8 years of age to do art and craft activities as well as a playground area.
Stickmaking Competition (Monday only) – 207 entries will be on display having competed in the 19 classes. There will be demonstrations of the craft for the duration of the Show.
Poleclimbing – the heats will commence on Monday at 11.30am and continue throughout the week culminating in the finals at 4.30pm on Thursday. Competitors will race against the timer to climb the 100ft poles and to ring the bell.
Woodchopping – competition will start at 10am on Monday and continue throughout the week and will feature various disciplines. The Jack & Jill competition will take place at 5pm on Thursday and you can enter on the day!
Bodgers – There will be a clog maker, wheel right, and cooper along with a new charcoal maker, a chair maker, coracle maker, coffin maker and a willow sculpture of a Welsh cob will be made during the first three days of the Show.
YFC – will compete in woodworking competition in the small action ring on the Thursday.
Tradestands are also judged with the best in each category. In addition a Gold Medal Certificate will be offered by the Royal Forestry Society of England, Wales and Northern Ireland for the Best Exhibitor Stand in the Forestry Section.
