5000 Schedules out for RWAS Winter Fair
30 September 2013
Livestock schedules for this year’s Royal Welsh Winter Fair have gone out to 5000 potential exhibitors. The event takes place on the showground at Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, on December 2 and 3, and the closing date for entries is October 23 2013.
The Winter Fair was first staged in 1990, has a reputation as being the best prime stock show in the UK, if not Europe, and is well established as one of the most popular attractions on the agricultural show calendar.
Leading stockmen from across the country will be competing for the top awards and a share of the thousands of pounds in prizes in the cattle section, and again this year several breed societies are putting up big cash awards to incentivise exhibitors. At least eight societies are offering prizes of £1000 for the supreme champion if it is sired by a registered bull of that society’s particular breed.
A number of sheep societies are also offering cash incentives for the winner of the supreme championship including a top prize of £500 from the British Charollais Sheep Society.
This year, for the first time, a pedigree Hereford cattle class has been introduced in both the steer and heifer sections and the society hopes that both classes will be well supported.
The ever-popular Sausage Competition has now been expanded, due to its phenomenal success, to include pies, steaks and burgers and has been
re-named the RWAS Meat Products Competition. The Dressed Poultry Competition, now in its third year, will once again by staged at the event and will culminate in an auction.
The sale of livestock on the second day of the Fair is a highlight of the event when keen bidding is expected for the quality stock forward. Selling begins at 3.00pm with the champion and reserve prize winners entering the ring at 3.15pm.
