Louise Owen Memorial Scholarship

10 July 2015

Edward Davies of Llanwddyn, Powys has become the very first recipient of the Royal Welsh Louise Owen Memorial Scholarship.

Louise was an accomplished wool handler and travelled widely across the globe. In her memory, Louise’s family established the Louise Owen Memorial Scholarship to provide a junior shearer with the opportunity to develop and advance their skills in sheep shearing.

Of all the applicants for the scholarship, Edward was deemed to be the junior Welsh shearer showing greatest promise.

The £1,000 scholarship will help fund a trip to New Zealand in the autumn of 2015 where Edward will be offered advanced training and will work with a pre-arranged shearing contractor.

Edward will be presented with the certificate at approximately 2.15pm on Tuesday 21 July in the Merion Shearing Centre at this year’s Royal Welsh Show.

“We are truly thankful to the generosity of Louise’s family and are delighted that such a promising young shearer will benefit from this incredible opportunity.” say’s Mr Peter Guthrie, Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Chairman of the Sheep Shearing Committee.

Further details of the scholarship and application forms can be obtained from:
Tracy Powell, Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, Llanelwedd, Builth Wells, Powys, LD2 3SY (tracy@rwas.co.uk).

The closing date for applications for next years scholarship is 1 October 2015.
