Royal Welsh elects 2016 President

14 December 2015

A well respected auctioneer from Corwen has been officially elected as the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s President for 2016.

Mr W Richard Jones FLAA FRAgS, the senior auctioneer, land agent and valuer at Farmers Marts (R. G Jones) Ltd based in Dolgellau, has taken over the prestigious role in Meirionnydd’s year as the society’s feature county.

Next year will be the fifth time Meirionnydd has been the feature county since the Royal Welsh Show settled permanently at the showground in 1963. The unique structure of feature counties and advisory committees is what sets the society apart from others and ensures the people of Wales retain ownership of the events. The fundraising efforts of all the counties since 1963 have contributed millions of pounds which are invested back into the showground, making it one of the finest in Europe. This has created a real sense of shared ownership to our site.

Proposed at the society’s annual council meeting last week by Mr Alun Evans CBE DL FRAgS, a former Chair of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society’s Council, Richard, or Dic as he is widely known, was described as “not a man to stand still”.

A busy man, Dic has been auctioneering for 43 years and has sold several thousands of sheep during his career. Having been the Chairman of the Meirionnydd Advisory Committee for over 30 years and a cattle steward at the Royal Welsh Show for over 40 years, Dic’s involvement with the society is longstanding and in recognition he was made an Honorary Life Governor some four years ago.

In accepting his presidential role, Dic said "despite being a small county, we have a large heart. We have a hugely generous county and already raised over £25,000".

Meirionnydd’s fundraising activities have already been taking place regularly over the past year and the committee are currently busy finalising plans for their 2016 Royal Welsh Grassland Event, which will take place on 9th June 2016 at the Rhug Estate, Corwen by kind permission of the Rt. Hon Lord Newborough.

The society is very much looking forward to working with Dic Jones and the whole Meirionnydd team throughout 2016.
